Mumbai (Bombay)๐ŸŒ‡

“Mumbai meri jaan” , as it is said, is set in the heart of mumbaikars. Mumbai also known as Bombay was built by the British. I'm a mumbaikar and I would like to say that -

“Once u come n stay,
U won't like to go away,
 Bom bom bom bom ,
 Bombay meri hai.”

It   is the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India. It is also one of the world's top ten centres of commerce.
Mumbai is built on what was once an archipelago of seven islands: Isle of Bombay, Parel, Mazagaon, Mahim, Colaba, Worli, and Old Woman's Island (also known as Little Colaba). Pleistocene sediments found along the coastal areas around Kandivali in northern Mumbai suggest that the islands were inhabited since the South Asian Stone Age. In beginning of the Common Era, they came to be occupied by the Koli fishing community. By 12th century many places were excavated by different rulers and settlers in each area. It was then captured by the British for nearly 200 years. In 1947 when India became independent it was restructured into Bombay State.

How Bombay became Mumbai ?
Officially, in 1995, that year, the right-wing Hindu nationalist party Shiv Sena won elections in the state of Maharashtra and presided over a coalition that took control of the state assembly. After the election, the party announced that the port city had been renamed after the Hindu goddess Mumbadevi, the city’s patron deity. Federal agencies, local businesses, and newspapers were ordered to adopt the change.

In my next blog I will be taking you through Mumbai's every corner.
Thank you!:-)
